Pipeline Engineering Glossary
Short Description
This glossary explains fundamental pipeline engineering terms in a concise, neutral way. It is intended to support quick orientation and to make the more detailed knowledge pages easier to understand.
Why the Topic Matters in Practice
Many misunderstandings do not arise from wrong formulas but from imprecise use of terminology. A compact glossary therefore creates a shared language basis for planning, installation and operation.
Terms
Outside Diameter
The outside diameter is a key dimension for the geometric classification of a pipe. It is often considered together with wall thickness.
Wall Thickness
Wall thickness describes the material thickness between the outer and inner pipe surface. It influences pressure classification, weight and the free internal diameter, among other things.
SDR
SDR is the ratio of outside diameter to wall thickness. It is used to classify pipe series geometrically, but it does not replace full system evaluation.
Pressure Loss
Pressure loss describes the pressure drop along a pipeline due to friction and local resistances.
Bending Radius
The bending radius describes the curvature on which a pipe is routed. Small radii mean strong curvature and can cause additional stresses.
Tensile Loading
Tensile loading occurs when forces act along the pipe axis, for example during pull-in operations or certain installation conditions.
Bedding
Bedding describes the zone in which a pipe is supported in the soil and structurally assisted in carrying loads. Its quality affects the interaction between pipe and soil.
Tightness Test
A tightness test is used to assess whether a system is tight within the intended framework. The type and scope of the test depend on the application.
Commissioning
Commissioning is the controlled transition of a completed system into its intended operating condition.
Operation
Operation includes the intended use of a piping system under real boundary conditions, including observation of load changes and deviations.
Standards and Regulatory References
The exact use of individual terms can vary depending on product standards, technical rules and application area. For binding design and verification, the relevant German and European rules are therefore decisive.
Project-Specific Review Note
This glossary provides general technical orientation. For binding decisions, the specific system context and the applicable rules must always be taken into account.
